Semaine du 16 - 20 May

Hello parents,

This week at Robert Hopkins, we have two important fund raising initiatives going on.

The first is Beams of Hope For Beacon Hill, Fort McMurray. Students have been asked to bring in money to be donated to the Canadian Red Cross for the Alberta Fires Appeal campaign. An official tax receipt will be provided for donations of $20 or more.

Our second fund raising activity is creating a gift basket for the Robert Hopkins Fun Fair. The theme of the C House basket is  puzzles. We are looking for donations of all types of puzzles - crosswords, sudoku, word searches, jigsaw puzzles for children and adults, brain teasers etc.

Thank you for your support with these initiatives.

Homework

This week the students are to continue nightly reading and hand in a resume of one the the things they have read.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Semaine de 25 - 29 avril

We're in the last week of April and hopefully spring is finally here to stay.

In Etudes Sociales, we are continuing to learn about Ancient China. In particular, we will be looking at the Terra Cotta warriors and The Great Wall.

Now that the weather is better, we are hoping to spend more Gym periods outside where there is much more room for physical activities.

This week's Devoirs is to learn the songs for Music Monday. I have sent copies of two of the three songs home with the students. You can hear them all online.

Bird Courting Song:  https://www.youtube.com.watch?v=2lKwG_gMNjo

We are One:  https://www.youtube.com.watch?v=EmMkwwYaN1E

Students are still expected to read nightly and record what they read in their Doutang Orange but there is no written reading response this week.

Special Event:  On Wednesday we are having a performance by the Junkyard Symphony at 10:45

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

le 11 - 15  avril

Welcome to another short week. We have a lot to pack into our 4 days.

Wednesday is a Day of Pink. this is a day against bullying. The entire school population is encouraged to wear a pink this Wednesday to show that Robert Hopkins is a safe place for everyone. Many schools across Canada participate in this. I picked up some cheap pink shirts for my sons.

Field Trip. Yes. We are going on another outing. On Friday April 22, the two Grade 4 classes are attending a performance by the string section of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. We need two parent volunteers for this trip. We will be leaving at 9:00 and returning by 12:00. Please sign and return the permission slip.

Devoir: This week's homework is different. Instead of Doutang Orange, the students need to study for their Science test on Roches et Minéraux. We will go over the material repeatedly in class. They need to be able to explain the difference between a rock and a mineral, name the 3 types or rocks and explain how they are formed and give two examples of how rocks and minerals are used in modern life.

PA Day: Reminder that Friday April 15 is a PA Day. There is no school for students that day.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me using the agenda or email.

Thank you for your support.

Semaine de 29 mars - 1 avril

Spring is here. Yippee! Hopefully the weather will cooperate and the school yard will dry up quickly. At this point it is still cold in the mornings and the yard is a mess of snow and mud. Please make certain your child comes dressed for outdoor play.

It is a short but busy week. On Thursday March 31, we are having our workshop with Scientists in the Schools. It is very short notice but this was the only available day until late May. We need 4 parent volunteers in order to run the workshop. If you can possibly help out, please let me know ASAP by calling the school 613- 745-2119 or putting a note in your child's agenda. On Friday April 1st, we are spending the day at the Museum of Nature. The students will be divided into groups for a self guided tour. They will have a set of questions to answer about the various displays. Thank you to the parents who have already volunteered to come with us on that trip.

There is no Duotang Orange Devoirs this week.

Thank you for your support.

Semaine de 7 - 11 mars

One more week to go before the March Break. I know the students are counting the days.
We have a few students leaving for holidays during the week so I am not assigning a Reading Response in the duotang orange this week. Students are still expected to read nightly and record what they read in their Reading Log.

The biggest events of the week include a "Looking at Pictures" presentation by a volunteer from the National Gallery on Friday. There is also a special Math activity to celebrate the end of their unit on Mass and Measurement. Please make sure you complete and return the permission slip Mrs. G is sending home.

Have a wonderful March Break.

Semaine de 22 - 26 février

Hello,
It's a regular five day week again, (at least it should be) There seems to be a lot going on at Robert Hopkins in the next few weeks.

Tuesday: It is Toonie Tuesday. For every $2.00 they bring in, the student's name will be entered in a                  draw to be picked to throw a pie at Mr. Thompson, Mrs.Belliveau or Mrs. Cudmore. Only                    two students from each class will be chosen. All the money raised goes to the Education
               Foundation.

Wednesday: We are participating in a workshop put on by Star Gymnastics.
Library Day Remember to bring back library books.

Thursday: Outdoor Fun Day. The student teachers have organized various games and activities for
the students. Remember the children will be spending much of the day
                                                outdoors. Dress appropriately.

Friday: We have our monthly assembly.

Devoirs:  We are working on identifying key points and summarizing what we read. This week the                     students are expected to complete the graphic organizer in their orange duotang. They                         know that I want more than one sentence answers.

Have a great week.

Semaine de 16 - 19 février

Here we are with another short week. I hope everybody was able to enjoy some warm family time over the long weekend. Now we are back into winter snow. What a lot of snow.

Because Monday was a holiday and Tuesday is a snow day, I will not be assigning the orange duotang for Devoirs this week. I still expect the students to read nightly but there is no written component for them to complete.

At school it is business as usual. In French we are continuing to work on writing paragraphs. In grammaire we are working on l'imparfait form of verbes.
We are looking deeper at L'Egypte Ancienne in Etudes Sociales and comparing their daily lives with ours.

If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me through the Agenda of office.
